First off, I have to admit Mr Wook’s films go over my head sometimes and Thirst is no different.

However this man can do no wrong. He takes a vampire story we’ve seen a few times before in different guises and puts a personal stamp on it that will last for a long time.  His films looks stunning and the cast are always the best they can be!

Thirst tells the story of a priest who enters a drug trial for an incurable disease out of what appears to be some misguided faith.  He ends up getting infused with a batch of vampire blood.  Where this blood comes from, I have no clue.  Maybe a sick joke by a vampire after walking by a donor van?

Then it becomes a boy meets girl film as our priest discovers his new found abilities and how to keep the EV Virus at bay.  He must feed to survive but not only survive, keep the disease which has some physical affects, dormant.

He meets a girl who’s treated like a slave, she’s been adopted by a mother who forced her into a marriage with her molly coddled sun.  Enraged this beauty has a plan to escape her servitude.  She uses her vampire lover, seduces him into sin and has him submit to her will.

We’ve seen it all before and I saw it coming a mile off.  It’s only in the second act when murders occur that we see Mr Wook take flight in direction, thick red splashes of blood cover angel white walls in a glorious display of violence.

Our newly turned vampire becomes a hindrance for our priest who through his misguided love protects her from the world even though she sees herself as a predator and not as some kind of angel of mercy as the priest sees himself.

It’s another beautiful piece of film making which made me laugh once or twice as Mr Wook even in the korean language can direct his characters to make an international audience chuckle along with the subtitles.

I love this man, lets just hope America doesn’t try to rape his genius in some kind of misguided recreation of his masterpieces… remakes are killing the industry.

    Huzzah!!

Oh and the wire work is so obvious but it sorta adds to the ethereal nature of the vampire.  Also these vampires don’t sparkle in the sunlight like those Pussies in Twilight!

Go rent or buy it now.  It’s out on Bluray and DVD here in the UK :)
